How We Calculate This
Blend Calculations
- Blended density = 1 ÷ (Ratio A ÷ Density A + Ratio B ÷ Density B). Because the blend ratio splits the total weight by mass, the densities are combined by the reciprocal (harmonic) rule — volumes add, not densities.
- Strength estimate = Weighted average of material strengths (rule of mixtures)
- Safe temp range = Overlapping range of both materials
- Quantities = Project weight × Mass ratio for each material
Blended properties are rule-of-mixtures estimates. The density is exact for a uniform mix, but strength and temperature depend on layer adhesion, mixing method and print settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some filaments can be blended by alternating layers or using a mixing hot end. PLA+TPU blends create semi-flexible parts. Not all materials are compatible — check that print temperature ranges overlap and materials bond to each other.
Alternating layers means printing some layers with Material A and others with Material B. This creates a composite with properties between the two materials. A multi-material printer or manual filament swaps are required.
Yes. The print temperature should be in the overlapping safe range of both materials. If there is no overlap, the materials may not be compatible for blending.
