Paint Coverage Formulas
- Volume per coat = Surface area / (Coverage rate x Roughness factor)
- Total volume = Volume per coat x Number of coats
- Roughness factor = 0.8 (3D prints need ~20% more paint)
- Cans needed = Total volume / Can size (rounded up)
The roughness factor accounts for the increased surface area and absorption of 3D printed surfaces compared to smooth injection-moulded plastic. Filler primer significantly improves paint coverage on subsequent coats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Typically 2-3 coats of filler primer. The first coat fills the deepest layer lines, the second provides a smooth base. Sand lightly with 400 grit between coats. Some prints may need a third coat for a perfectly smooth finish.
Spray paint gives the most even finish and is fastest for medium/large parts. Airbrush gives the finest control and thinnest coats (ideal for miniatures). Brush painting works for small areas but can leave brush marks on large surfaces.
Layer lines create micro-ridges that increase effective surface area by 15-25%. The rough texture also absorbs paint faster, reducing coverage per coat. Filler primer helps by creating a smoother base surface before painting.
Automotive filler primer (like Halfords or Rust-Oleum filler primer) works excellently as it fills layer lines. For miniatures, hobby primers (Citadel, Vallejo Surface Primer) are thinner and preserve detail better.
