How We Calculate This
Formula
- Layers = Object height / Layer height (rounded up)
- Print time per layer = Avg path length per layer / Print speed
- Extrusion time = Layers x Print time per layer
- Total time = Extrusion time x (1 + Travel overhead %) + Layers x Layer-change time
The layer-change term accounts for the Z-lift, retraction and acceleration ramp the printer performs at each new layer (~1-2 s on most machines; adjust under Advanced). This is a simplified estimate. For accurate timing, use your slicer software which also models per-layer infill, top/bottom solid layers, jerk and acceleration limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Slicer estimates are typically within 10-20% of actual. This simple calculator gives a rough ballpark. Actual time depends on acceleration, jerk, retraction moves and number of travel moves.
Perimeters and infill take the bulk of time. This calculator adds two separate overheads: a Travel % for non-printing moves and retractions, plus a per-layer Layer-change time for the Z-lift and acceleration ramp at each new layer. Smaller layer heights mean more layers, so both the extrusion time and the total layer-change overhead grow.
Increase layer height, reduce infill percentage, use fewer perimeters, increase speed (within your hot end flow limit), or use a larger nozzle.
