Wear Estimation
Estimated life = Base life × Abrasiveness × Temperature × Flow rate × Nozzle diameter factors
Brass nozzles have a base life of ~500 hours with non-abrasive filament. Carbon fibre filament can reduce this by about 85% on brass — down to roughly 75 hours. The abrasiveness penalty is scaled by nozzle hardness, so a hardened steel nozzle keeps close to its ~3000-hour life even on abrasive composites (brass survives ~0.3 kg of carbon fibre, hardened steel ~4 kg, and ruby or tungsten carbide 8 kg+ with no measurable wear). The calculator also factors in printing temperature, flow rate and nozzle diameter.

A brass nozzle printing standard PLA or PETG lasts approximately 400-600 hours. With abrasive filaments like carbon fibre or glow-in-the-dark, it can wear out in as little as 50-100 hours. Check for under-extrusion as the first sign of wear.
Switch to hardened steel if you regularly print abrasive filaments (carbon fibre, glass fibre, glow-in-the-dark, wood or metal fill). Hardened steel lasts 5-10 times longer with abrasives but conducts heat slightly less efficiently, so you may need to increase nozzle temperature by 5-10 degrees.
Higher temperatures soften brass nozzles slightly, accelerating wear when printing abrasive materials. Printing 15+ degrees above the recommended temperature for your filament can reduce nozzle life by 10-15%. This effect is less significant for hardened steel and ruby nozzles.
Signs of nozzle wear include: under-extrusion despite correct e-steps, inconsistent extrusion width, poor first layer adhesion despite correct Z-offset, new stringing that was not present before, and visible enlargement of the nozzle opening when inspected with a magnifying glass.
