Bridging Distance Calculator — Maximum Bridge Length
Calculate the maximum bridging distance your printer can achieve based on material, layer height and cooling.
How We Calculate This
Bridge Distance Estimation
Max bridge = Base distance × Cooling × Layer height × Nozzle × Speed × Enclosure × Temperature × Fan-ramp modifiers
Key Factors
Part cooling is the dominant factor — excellent cooling can increase bridge distance by 30% or more. Thinner layers bridge further because the extruded strand has less mass to sag. Slower speeds give the filament more time to cool and solidify mid-air. A long fan ramp-up time also trims the usable span, because the opening millimetres of the bridge are laid down before the part-cooling fan reaches full speed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bridging is when the printer extrudes filament across an unsupported gap between two points. Unlike overhangs (which have partial support below), bridges have no support underneath. The extruded filament must span the gap while cooling quickly enough to avoid sagging.
The most effective improvements are: maximise part cooling fan speed, reduce print speed to 20-30mm/s for bridge layers, use a thinner layer height (0.12-0.16mm), lower nozzle temperature by 5-10°C, and reduce flow rate to 85-90% for bridge lines. Most slicers have dedicated bridge settings.
PLA bridges best among common FDM materials because it solidifies quickly and has low thermal expansion. PETG is moderate. ABS and ASA are poor bridgers due to higher printing temperatures and sensitivity to cooling. TPU and Nylon are the most difficult to bridge cleanly.
