Relief Depth Formulas
- Optimal depth = Feature size x Depth ratio (3-15% depending on relief type)
- Actual layers = Desired depth / Layer height (rounded)
- Adjusted depth = Actual layers x Layer height (snapped to layer boundary)
- Min feature width = Nozzle diameter x your chosen feature multiplier (default 1.5)
Low relief uses 3% of feature size, medium relief 8%, and high relief 15%. The adjusted depth snaps your desired value to the nearest layer boundary for accurate reproduction. A 0.4mm nozzle can resolve features down to roughly 1x its diameter, but 2-3x nozzle diameter is the reliable practical floor for FDM detail.

A bas-relief (or low relief) is a sculptural technique where figures project slightly from a flat background. In 3D printing, this means creating a panel with raised or recessed features that create a 3D effect while remaining relatively flat.
Low relief typically ranges from 0.5mm to 2mm depth. This is enough for shadows to create visual depth without requiring supports or excessive material. At 0.12mm layer height, this gives 4-17 depth levels.
The printer can only produce surfaces at exact layer height increments. A depth of 1.5mm with 0.2mm layers will be printed as either 1.4mm (7 layers) or 1.6mm (8 layers). Designing at exact multiples ensures your intended depth.
Use the finest layer height your printer supports well: 0.08-0.12mm is ideal. Each layer represents one possible depth level, so finer layers give smoother gradients between raised and recessed areas.
Yes, upward-facing reliefs print well for low and medium relief. High relief with undercuts may need supports. For best results, orient the relief perpendicular to the build plate so the X/Y resolution captures fine detail.
