Logo Sizing Formulas
- Min line width = Nozzle diameter (cannot print finer than this)
- Min logo width = Nozzle diameter x Complexity multiplier (simple x14, moderate x20, complex x30)
- Recommended depth = max(2, ceil(0.5mm / Layer height)) x Layer height raised (at least 2 layers), or max(3, ceil(0.6mm / Layer height)) x Layer height engraved (at least 3 layers) — i.e. the 0.5mm/0.6mm floor rounded up to a whole number of layers (0.60mm at a 0.2mm layer)
- Detail ratio = Desired width / Min line width
The complexity multiplier accounts for how many fine features a logo contains. Simple block logos need fewer nozzle widths across (~14, about 5.6mm at a 0.4mm nozzle) than intricate logos with thin lines and small details (~30, about 12mm). The depth is held at a minimum of 0.5mm (raised) or 0.6mm (engraved) per i.materialise design guidance so the relief is not lost or sanded away, then rounded up to a whole number of layers.
Frequently Asked Questions
With a 0.4mm nozzle, simple logos (block letters, basic shapes) can be printed as small as roughly 5-6mm wide — this calculator returns 5.6mm. Moderate logos need about 8mm and complex logos with fine lines and small text need 10-15mm (around 12mm here). Because the minimum width scales with nozzle size, fitting a 0.2mm nozzle roughly halves these figures.
Aim for at least 0.5mm of relief for a raised (embossed) logo and 0.6mm or more for an engraved (cut-in) logo, in line with i.materialise design guidance — features shallower than this can blend into the surface or vanish when the part is sanded. This calculator floors the recommended depth at those values, then rounds up to a whole number of layers (depth = 2 layers raised / 3 layers engraved, whichever is greater).
Raised logos are easier to print and more visible without painting. Engraved logos are more durable (no raised edges to chip off) and show up well when painted or filled with a contrasting colour.
Remove fine details like thin lines, small text, and gradients. Convert to a bold, high-contrast version. Thicken any lines to at least 2x your nozzle diameter. Test print at your target size before committing.
Yes, using a filament change at the logo layer. Print the base in one colour, pause at the logo layer, swap filament, and continue. This works best with raised logos that are 2-3 layers tall.
