Modular Design Calculator — Connector Dimensions
Calculate connector dimensions and tolerances for modular printed assemblies.
How We Calculate This
Connector Dimension Formulas
- Per-side clearance = Base fit clearance + Printer tolerance (the two STACK). Tight base 0.1, snug 0.2, loose 0.4mm.
- Female dimension = Male dimension + 2 x clearance (clearance applies to BOTH faces of the slot)
- Connector depth = Nominal size x depth factor (typical proportioning guideline, varies by type — editable in Advanced Options)
- Min wall = Nozzle diameter x wall multiplier (default 3 perimeters = 1.2mm for a 0.4mm nozzle)
The male (tab) part keeps the nominal dimension, while the female (slot) part is enlarged by the clearance on each side, so the total slot enlargement is twice the per-side clearance. Because the printer-tolerance value is added on top of the base fit clearance, a snug base (0.2mm) with a typical ±0.15mm printer tolerance produces 0.35mm per side (0.70mm total enlargement) — still a hand-press fit on most printers. The depth factors (dovetail 1.5x, slot 2.0x, pin 3.0x, clip 1.2x) are common rules of thumb — for example a pin/alignment peg is usually sunk around 3x its diameter — not a fixed standard, so adjust them in Advanced Options to match your geometry.
