Drying Time Calculation
- Drying time = Base hours x Moisture multiplier x Dryer efficiency factor
- Light moisture: 1.0x base time
- Moderate moisture: 1.5x base time
- Heavy moisture: 2.5x base time
Temperature Guidelines
Each material has a recommended drying temperature that is well below its glass transition temperature to prevent spool deformation. Never exceed the maximum safe temperature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common signs include popping or crackling sounds during printing, increased stringing, rough surface finish, reduced layer adhesion, and brittle prints. Nylon and TPU are especially hygroscopic and absorb moisture within hours of exposure.
It is possible but risky. Most kitchen ovens have poor temperature accuracy at low settings and can overshoot, deforming the spool or fusing filament together. A dedicated filament dryer or food dehydrator gives much more consistent results.
In a sealed container with desiccant, filament can stay dry for months. In open air, hygroscopic materials like Nylon can absorb enough moisture to cause print issues within 12-24 hours. PLA and PETG last a few days to a week.
