Filament Storage Calculator — Desiccant & Container Sizing
Calculate desiccant requirements and storage container sizes for your filament collection.
How We Calculate This
Calculation Method
- Spool volume = pi x (diameter/2)^2 x width. This is a solid bounding cylinder (the disc's overall envelope), not the free air around the wound filament — we size the container to the whole disc because the full spool has to physically fit.
- Container volume = Total spool bounding volume x 1.3 (30% extra for spacing and access)
- Desiccant = 2g of silica gel per litre of container volume (industry guides give 1-2g/L, i.e. ~28-56g per cubic foot; we use 2g/L for the humid UK climate)
- Shelf length = Spool count x (width + 1cm gap)
