How We Calculate This
Calculation Method
The calculator estimates print weight by considering both the solid shell and sparse infill:
- Solid weight = Model volume x Material density
- Shell weight = Solid weight x Shell fraction (approx 15%)
- Infill weight = Solid weight x (1 - Shell fraction) x (Infill % / 100)
- Total weight = Shell weight + Infill weight
The shell fraction accounts for perimeters, top and bottom layers which are printed solid regardless of infill setting.

Because prints are not solid — they have infill (typically 10-30%) and shells. Only the outer walls and top/bottom surfaces are solid. The interior uses a sparse pattern saving significant material.
No, this estimates the weight of the part itself. Support structures typically add 5-30% extra material depending on the model geometry. Add extra accordingly.
Infill weight scales linearly, but the shells stay constant — so halving the infill does NOT halve the total weight. Using this calculator’s 15% shell model, a 20% infill print weighs roughly two-thirds (about 65%) of a 40% infill print, not half, because the fixed shell weight dominates more at lower infill.
