How We Calculate This
Formula
- Usable area = Bed size - 2 x Probe offset (each axis)
- Point spacing = Usable length / (Grid points - 1)
- Total points = Grid X x Grid Y
The probe offset is subtracted from each edge to ensure the probe stays within the bed boundaries. The remaining area is divided evenly into a grid.
Frequently Asked Questions
A 3x3 grid (9 points) is sufficient for flat beds. A 5x5 grid (25 points) works well for most printers. Use 7x7 or more only if your bed has significant warping or is larger than 300mm.
Probe offset is the distance from the edge of the bed that the probe cannot reach, typically because the probe is mounted to the side of the nozzle. This margin reduces the probeable area.
It depends on your printer. If your bed is stable, probing once and saving the mesh is fine. If you remove the build plate between prints, probe each time for best results.
More points give better compensation for warped beds but take longer to probe. Beyond 7x7 there is rarely any noticeable benefit unless your bed is severely warped.
