Time Estimation Method
- Extrusion time = Total volume / (Speed x Layer height x Line width)
- Travel overhead = 15% added for non-printing moves
- Layer changes = ~3 seconds per layer for Z-hop and positioning
Total volume is calculated from wall perimeters, top/bottom solid layers, and infill. Filament weight uses PLA density of 1.24 g/cm3.
Frequently Asked Questions
This estimator gives a rough guide based on geometry and settings. Actual print time depends on slicer path optimisation, acceleration settings, retraction count and part complexity. Expect estimates within 20-30% of actual time for simple shapes.
Layer height has the biggest single impact. Halving layer height from 0.2mm to 0.1mm roughly doubles print time. Print speed is the next biggest factor, followed by infill percentage.
Yes, especially for solid box-shaped parts. Going from 20% to 100% infill typically takes 2 to 3 times as long, because the printer deposits far more material inside the part. For thin-walled or hollow parts the difference is smaller, as wall and top/bottom surface printing dominate the time.
Slicer estimates account for acceleration, jerk, and travel moves more accurately. Complex geometry with many small features causes frequent retraction and direction changes that add time. Bowden tube setups have longer retraction moves.
