Formula
- Layers = Model height / Layer height (rounded up)
- Time per layer = your seconds-per-layer figure scaled by 60 / Base speed
- Print time = Layers x Time per layer
- Time saved = (Fine time - Draft time) / Fine time
Layer height changes only the Z resolution, not the XY toolpath, so at a fixed print speed each layer takes about the same time and total time is driven by layer count alone. A typical FDM layer takes 30-60 seconds; raising the base print speed scales every profile's per-layer time down equally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Draft (0.3mm layers) typically prints 2-3x faster than fine (0.1mm layers) for the same part, because it uses one third the number of layers. As a reference, a 3DBenchy slices to 160 layers at 0.3mm (about 1h07m), 240 at 0.2mm (about 1h35m) and 480 at 0.1mm (about 2h56m) — so 0.1mm to 0.3mm is roughly 2.6x faster.
Layer height only changes the vertical (Z) resolution, not the XY toolpath. Halving the layer height doubles the number of layers, and each layer takes about the same time to print at a fixed speed, so the total time roughly doubles. Print time is therefore close to inversely proportional to layer height.
Layer height has minimal effect on tensile strength. Thicker layers may actually give slightly better layer adhesion. Wall thickness and infill percentage matter far more for strength.
Use 0.1mm or lower for visible surfaces that need to look smooth, miniatures, and parts with fine details. For functional parts hidden from view, draft quality saves hours.
