How We Calculate This
Shipping Size Formulas
- Box dimensions = Part dimensions + (2 x padding) per axis, i.e. padding added to every side
- Packaging weight = Estimated box + wrapping material weight
- Volumetric weight = L(cm) x W(cm) x H(cm) / 5000
- Chargeable weight = Greater of actual weight or volumetric weight
The volumetric weight formula (divide by 5000) is used by most UK couriers. Royal Mail uses a different system based on size bands.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use at least 25-30mm of padding (bubble wrap or foam) on all sides. Fragile or detailed prints may need 40-50mm. Parts with thin features or overhangs are especially vulnerable to damage in transit.
Couriers charge by whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight = L x W x H (cm) / 5000. Lightweight but bulky packages are charged by volume rather than weight.
Wrap each part in bubble wrap or tissue paper. Fill empty space with crumpled paper or packing peanuts. Place heavy parts at the bottom. Seal with strong tape. Label as fragile if appropriate.
Royal Mail Second Class is cheapest for small parcels under 2kg. For larger or heavier items, compare Evri, Royal Mail, and DPD via a comparison site. Small Letter rates work for very thin flat prints.
