Temperature Ranges
Temperature ranges are compiled from manufacturer data sheets and community-tested settings.
Speed adjustment
Faster printing requires higher nozzle temperature to maintain proper filament flow. The calculator adjusts the recommended temperature based on your print speed.
Nozzle size
Larger nozzles (0.6mm, 0.8mm) push more material and benefit from slightly higher temperatures. Smaller nozzles (0.2mm, 0.3mm) can use slightly lower temperatures.
First layer
This calculator prints the first layer about 5ยฐC hotter than subsequent layers for better bed adhesion. A hotter, more fluid first layer spreads and keys into the build surface more effectively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Start in the middle and adjust. Lower temperatures give better overhangs and bridging but weaker layer adhesion. Higher temperatures improve layer bonding but may cause stringing.
Every printer thermistor is slightly different and some read up to 10C off. Your ambient temperature and print speed also affect the optimal temperature. Always calibrate with a temperature tower.
PLA can work without one but benefits from 50-60C. PETG, ABS, Nylon and PC absolutely require a heated bed. A heated bed improves adhesion and reduces warping for all materials.
