Each layer ends with a mechanical peel, so a layer is one wear cycle. Large prints that cover more of the build plate raise the peel force per layer, so the area factor (a rough heuristic, not a datasheet figure) shortens estimated life for high-coverage work and extends it for small parts.

Release film is rated in exposure layers (peel cycles), not hours. Standard FEP is rated for roughly 10,000 layers, while nFEP/PFA lasts about 30,000 layers — 2-3x longer. As a rough rule of thumb that is around 30-40 typical prints for standard FEP, but always judge by condition: visible cloudiness, scratches or dents mean replace regardless of count.
Film wears from the mechanical peel at the end of every layer, so each layer is one wear cycle. Two prints with the same layer count wear the film equally even if their exposure times — and therefore total hours — differ wildly. That is why manufacturers and the community rate film in layers, not hours. You can read total layers from your slicer for each job and add them up.
nFEP is a marketing name for PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) film — the same fluoropolymer, so "nFEP" and "PFA" are interchangeable. It is more flexible and lower-peel than standard FEP, so it both improves reliability and lasts about 2-3x longer (≈30,000 vs ≈10,000 layers). It costs roughly 2x standard FEP, so for regular printing it is usually worth it.
Signs include: visible cloudiness or whitening, scratches or dents in the film, prints sticking to the FEP instead of the build plate, and rising print-failure rates. Any puncture means replace immediately. The layer estimate here is a guide — physical condition is the final word, so inspect the film every 10-15 prints.
Yes: clean the vat thoroughly between resin changes, never scrape with metal tools (use plastic scrapers only), remove any cured resin stuck to the film between prints, keep peel speeds gentle, and re-tension the film if your printer allows it. Failed prints left to cure on the film are a common cause of early damage, so filter resin after a failure.
